Man....can you believe I spent around 250 dollars for an SK-1 back in 1987. I used it with my Casio RZ-1 drum machine. My god...lo-fi extreme!!!!! It was about a 500 dollar set up back in the day!!!!! I still have both machines. Oh, the 80's:-) Good cheesy fun!
Tom    01/05/2003 05:57
Recently got out the old Sk-1 to find that it no longer works ! Must be somthing to do with the power switch or something; it doen't turn on and I've tried it with the batteries and the AC adaptor. Any advice would be appreciated. Can I get this repaired for less than I could by a new one?

Yeah.....oh yeah.....I've had this and the SK-5 for ages and now hope to do some circuit-bending on these little puppies for my drum bike, The Rhythmic Transformation Station. Will check out - [http://www.living-net.com/jedrek/A/gear/SK1.htm for more c-bending fun. Thank you so much for the manual.

Can't wait to try out this SK-1 percussion soundfont. There's something about the SK-1 you just gotta love. From the cheesie analogue percussion sounds to the grainy 8-bit digital samples. I bought my SK-1 when they first hit the streets here in Canada for $200. Even a used Ensoniq Mirage was still $1100 back then. Modified mine a few years ago by replacing the mini keys with full sized keys from a broken Intellivision keyboard. Someday I'll grab another one and mod it with the MIDI-in mod and rack mount it.

Man, Id been looking for days, and I was at the swap meet, Got the SK 5 off this mexican dude for five dollars, still in its package. Use a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter, and sample boss drum machine guitars, and vocal craziness. I use it in my heavy crust punk band "SOLAMENTE". Had my Casio sk 1 back in 80's. What a flashback seeing this site. I remeber learning to play Herbie Hancock's rock it and axel f using the brass ensemble voice cause it sounded "synthee", cheap ass machine, but I'd kill to have one now just for jokes, 80's kill!!!!
Hayden Baptiste  [wanderingworx-AT-hotmail.com]  05/14/2003 03:32
Oh yeah, another thing that sk1 was good for...prank calls. Sample your voice playback in a low slower pitch, man you could sound like the devil. This was also before call display was invented, good times in the 80's though, 80's kill!!

Hiya. I have a pile of these things, and one is more brilliant than the next... 'til I break it. :) I just found the pink one at a thrift store today. I was wigging out waiting for the saleslady to get it from behind the counter for me, thinking that someone might snap it up. Yeah, right... Anyway, it's brilliant and gives me hope that I'll find one of those DM-100's someday. :) Keep up the good work, Tony.

Hello, R U really serious? I am just about to send mine over to a music teacher at the local high school. If you are willing to purchase it from me, please let me know how much you REALLY will pay. If it's worth out time, I'll just put that money into a small machine with a MIDI output, as that is what she would like also. Thank you and have a great one, Jeff

Hey. I just got an SK-1 from a Goodwill store. I brought it home and it worked fine. Then it just stopped working. The power switch seems to have ceased functioning and it now remains powered except when the batteries are removed. Although it is powered, however, it does not do anything, no sound, nothing. Checked the speaker, works fine. Any help would be really appreciated. A link to a schematic would also be very helpful. Thank you.
Matt  [Mr.Niceguy-AT-bassplayer.cc]  08/05/2003 01:25
I just got a perfect working SK1 for $.50, that's fifty cents at a yard sale. I couldn't be happyier. It works perfect. The SK1 can do a lot of things that I haven't heard anyone talk about. Use your output from your 4 track, or whatever and go into the mike input (keep the volume low on the fader) and you can sample drum tracks, guitar tracks, whatever. The drumtracks come out off kilter because of the time allotment, but you can still make them work. You just have to sort of, let go... Also, run the output through your electro harmonix memory man. You can get these rythems to become more useable. Then you can add a straight drum track and then more samples. This is my 2nd sk1. The first was stolen, so I'm very happy to have found this one. To the guy who's Sk1 stopped working, did you check the power supply? Does it work with the 5 AA batteries?

I've been searching the web, but the only thing I can find about bending the sk-1 is the midi mod. I want to build one that's got plenty of access to modulation and att/sus/decay/rel pots for tweaking. Where can I get a schematic to build one like the "studio" bent versions you can buy on ebay? There's a link to my page on AP at the bottom of this post. Check out "In Modest"- I wrote everything with a stock sk-1 and a computer!

desperate to find many sk's for circuit bending. am willing to pay (and possibly negotiate ) your asking price. i've already been successful in bending one so far . the extras include: 3 potentiometers, 1 two- point switch, 2 three- point switches and two leds. the sounds are incredible and it is getting harder to find these babies. write back if you are wanting to sell.

The SK1 is quite possibly the best electronic instrument ever made. If you want to hear it in full circuit bent action, just check out the last Autechre album Draft 7.30. They still have an sk1 at the heart of their studio, fully circit bent and midi fitted... apparently this whole thing started when one of them spilt a can of Vimto on the sk1, and now we all want one! Another album to listen to is Cryptoburners by Team Doyobi (they have an SK1, an SK5 and an SK10), it's an adventre into the depths of messed-up electro-compter-colour-game-sound. and probably the best album that Skam have released to date... remember kids, choose your own adventrure..

I got a SK-1 on my 8th birthday, i played with it so often, my mother went nuts. Sometimes I caught my dad playing with it. Even on vacation, driving to France I played it in the car. Now i still got my SK-1 (16 year later), and now and then i play with it. When i was 14 i bought an Amiga with sampler, and now i make tracks on my Mac. I planning to go on stage with my SK-1 and other synth, so the SK-1 was the key to sampling and synthesizing.

Ha Ha, I got mine NEW in 1986 for 76 dollars and I just KEPT it -- manual included! Me an my boyfriend went nuts making samples, and we've even brought it to hippie dippie drumcircle at campfire jams where bob added mournful fake flute whortlings that sounded like a real ... um, plastic pitch pipe or one of those strange clay picolos the south americans play. You can do a whole lot of sound modifications just layering up effects and waves and delays and envelopes right with the keys on top folks. I of course use it more for getting a good campfire version of "trans europe express" going... if the residents can chant "coca cola adds life" on eskimo I can do 'trans europe express" in drum circles..

Terry P.  [Shortdude48-AT-Yahoo.com]  07/30/2004 05:06
No midi is required on a sk1 to sync it to your work. Just use the internal sequencer and then hook up a jack to one of the little sequencer advance buttons under the micro phone. This then advances the sequence by on note each time a trigger signal (or any individual out from a drummachine or metronome or cvgate)

The last time i dug it out me and my boyfriend went nuts plugging it into my computer and gutar. I'm planning to make some music with it some time. Oh yes and the best feature of all is how loud that volume will go... i don't think i ever needed it above half way in my life. It's things like that that make you wonder exacly what they where up to then. making a 'toy' with ear-splitting volume

My parents got me an SK 1 when I was just 4 years old! 17 years later and I still have it and love it to bits. Its had the inevitable periods of inactivity but it was always dug out again after a couple of years for pure novelty value. This thing has been everywhere - I remember thrashing the hell out of it at boarding school for example; hiding it up my shirt and sampling teachers in class- hilarious until i accidently pressed a key during a maths test and got sent to the headmaster. Its the keyboard that got me hooked on electronic / dance music... And now its a classic synth (cue wistfull look). Anyhow, this is such a cool nostalgia site, how wierd are the other mutilated versions of the SK1 I never even knew existed?! Ill swap mine for a Fararri, any takers?

I'm not sure if I have the right power adapter for mine. Will someone please tell me what specs are on the proper one. I have one that looks right ----it says: Technical Devices AC ADAPTOR model no. dv-1250 --INPUT: 120vac 60 Hz 12W---OUTPUT: 12VDC 500mA.....I'm afraid to use it because the SK1 says DC 7.5V at the plug in location. I've been to Radio Shack and Batteries Plus and neither have been able to help. HELP!!!!! Just tell me what the correct adapter says on it and where I might find one. THANKS!!!!!!!

I made some brackets for the toilet and rigged the SK1 up so that if anyone presses the bell at the front door whilst i'm doing the business I can trigger a key which is linked up to a 500w sound outdoor system and scare the living daylights out of the person that called, I sampled a tommy machine gun, excellent.... SK1 yesssssssss, love to see if casio will do a sk10 for the future complete with delay times, ring modulation (get it ring modulation) and reverb.... la la la

I am pretty much a fan. I currently own the SK-5 in perfect condition and I find it much better than the Sk-1. I downloaded the SK-1 samples of this site and I was like WTF! It sounds sooo childish! I thought the SK-5 was abit corny but now I know the real corny one..lol Anyway, for its time it was pretty cool. But now, the computer does everything.. I wish I owned all the SK Machines.

No, the RZ-1 doesn't have any trigger inputs, just separate audio outputs. You could trigger them through midi with an octopad or something similar.

Did any of you see the newest episode of "Pimp My Ride"? They hack up an SK-1 and run triggers to the seats of the car so when you sit down on it, a note from the keyboard is played through the car stereo. It seemed to only be able to play 4 or 5 notes and was stuck using the piano tone, but what an awesome idea. It would be even better if you still had the option to sample. Also in the new MTV movie "Hustle and Flow", from what I've seen in the trailers, the main character walks around with a SK-5 playing out ideas he has for rap beats. What's the deal MTV? Maybe they're working on a reality show based solely on the SK series, where a bunch of kids live together, sit around and make up cheesy songs. If so Sign me up!

I've been collecting cheap little keyboards for a few years now and have a melange of Yamahas and Casios, etc. but it wasn't until earlier this week that I happened upon the SK1. I got this little guy in a thrift store/ antique shop in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania for 10 bucks (negotiated from 12) and it's blowing my mind. At first I almost passed it up because I figured I already had a similar instrument at home but when I saw the word "SAMPLING" I knew this baby was something special. Sincere thanks to this website as it has been a tremendous resource and I look forward to investigating the many possibilities of the SK1! I had my eye on the manual on Ebay and thought I'd Google SK1 and look where I ended up...thanks for the online manual; it really helped clarify some of the features. Keep up the great work! Johnny

My daughter accidentally plugged the adaptor of the "110 volts casio organ" into 220 volts. The organ does not work now even if we plug it to the 110 volts socket.I am really depply saddened about this... I was told by an electrician that, it is possible, that the damage is only on the adaptor, and that if I buy a new adaptor with the same specifications, the organ may still work. Can you please tell me your comments on this as soon as you can? Thank you for your time Bothered... Blandie morales Manila Philippines

This is the only sampling keyboard I've ever had. This thing works with my style of creativity. But I would like to move up. Please fill me in. I had a huge technics keyboard thing back in the 90's. That's how I learned about sequencing, midi, and arranging. I would like to graduate from the sk1 to something similair, but with better sampling rates, polyphony, memory, ect. Does anyone have a recommendation? Please email me at riskmonger@hotmail.com I may never be able to find this site again. Thanks.

I am forming an SK-1 ARMY, where we get as many SK-1's as possible in one place and play shows using ONLY SK-1's and whatever amps, pedals, reverbs anyone wants. I am based in the Seattle area and would be limited by that, but I think this is a great idea for anyone in an area with 10 or more SK-1's in circulation. Help! I have an old Casio SK-1. I want to attach it to my computer and record what I play? How do I do that?
Linda Alex    09/14/2005 04:14
I've read about some problems with the SK-1 unit not powering on even with fresh batteries or a proper AC adaptor. I found the simplest solution, and the one that worked for me, was to simply clean the unit. To fix the power problem on the SK-1, the problem is usually dirty connectors, for example the metal prongs on the "power switch" that hit the circuit board. I am by no means a techie, but i found it quite simple to take apart the SK-1 and clean the dirty power switch. There are about 4 "sets" of screws, including the outer casing, the keyboard, the sampling, and the main circuit board. Each of these can be carefully removed. Take notes on what you are taking off, however, because there are a few grounding wires that need to bee reattached. Also, to clean or glue back together broken keys, you can pry off the plastic strip covering the screws that hold in the keys; you need to "unpry" the strip from the inside of the module, however, to awoid damaging the outside. I am very happy with my SK-1 now, which i got when i was 6. Please email me with problems and I will do my best to help.

i must say, i am the proud owner of a big briar theremin, 2 keytars (ax-1 & ax-7), a 12 space rack full of modules effects and other crap, and a closet full of keyboards from casio's to korgs, yet the cheap ass casio sk-1 is quite possibly one of my all time favorites. now how the hell do i get my hands on a pink one? also i would give my big toe for one of those arabic sk-8a's. f'n neat!! if any one is selling one hit me up. alot of people have been wondering if anyone makes kits with a preassembled chip for the midi mod. well go here http://highlyliquid.com/ and in closing i would like to say thank you very very very much Tony Mason for scanning the manual. god bless you man.

What an underrated instrument! I like to hook a turntable up to my old receiver, then run a patch cable from the headphone jack on the receiver to the line-in on the keyboard. If you adjust the bass/treble levels, you get a really wonderful sample that way. Especially fun with records with open breaks, and classical records. I found mine for $8 at a local thrift store with the AC adapter included (go figure....those always have a way of disappearing) I would not part with the thing. I used to have a Yamaha VSS-30, but no way are those worth what they're bringing these days! You could have a bunch of SK-1's for the $100+ the Yamaha brings. Only thing cooler about the Yamaha is how you can record/play back a sequence.

The SK-1 is definitely one of my secret weapons, as I know it is for many others. I bought mine in 2002 for $50 with the MIDI In modification intact. I normally have to notch out the incredibly loud 60Hz line hum when I record it from its line out, but that's not a problem if you have a good 2-track editing program. One of the best uses is (I think someone else mentioned this) to connect a synth that has a decent string sound to the input of the SK-1, then hold down two A notes an octave apart, then (still holding) press the sample button until the time runs out (*bink!*). Loop it, select the square envelope, and VOILA! Instant cheap imitation Mellotron! Drown it in enough reverb and it can actually pass for that good ol' 3 violins. (Actually, the sound is closer to that of the Birotron, which Rick Wakeman and Dave Biro developed as an alternative to the Mellotron, but uses endlessly-looping 8-track tapes.) I'll never part with my SK-1. I'm actually thinking of getting one of the bigger models that has memory, so I don't have to re-sample that string sound all the time.

Just picked up an Sk-1 keyboard today at a Goodwill (donation driven, thrift store), man does this thing bring back memories!!! it was only $2.50, guess they didn't know what it was, can appear to be a kid's toy to uneducated eyes I guess! But FAR from it! (well kids like to play on them too!) But its actually a serious keyboard. Speaking of kids which reminds me of why I posted... I used to have, I guess it was an SK-1 had to be.. it was very similar to the ones you see everywhere, only the keys were rubber and some were a different color, think it was more black in color too. It was like the styling was of a newer model, think it was actually missing the vibrato and portamento, it was not the sk-5 or the realistic one. Maybe there was a kids version? (stipped down a bit of complicated things?) I dunno! but I'm very happy with my find! was just curious about what that older one was. -thanks!

There is a little trick I used to do with the SK-1 that would make the sample loop and go from the highest possible frequency (higher than the human ear can hear to barely audible low grumbling). I was doing this back in '87! I thought it was cool, I had no idea I was an early bender lol! I remember it was a combination of keys. I remember the portamento had to be on, and you would have to press another key while or just after you press the sample key. It might be a three key combination. I try this and my Casio hangs up. If it hangs up, you can hit the reset button. I was doing this back in '87 when it first came out. I didn't realise I was bending, or whatever you call it, but I guess I was one of the first to try this.

I am stupid and did not notice that the new posts now show at the top of the list. They didn't use to. Tony's been screwing with this site, and now I'm all confused and scared. Anyway, the commercials are great.

Yes! This is amazing! I had my sk1 for 15 years and had the radio shack one. I do a lot of different kinds of work but also do sound art and a lot of my methods came from my beloved sk1. If you sample static at just the right sound level and frequency it plays back almost orchestral. A lo-fi trick was to wait until my batteries were about done and it distorted and fuzzed out the pre sets and then i would sample and plug in and had a great new thing to work with. I wonder if anyone else did a kind of beatbox into it to get a better drum sound? I got it to about an 808 or 909 after a lot of experiments. Another simple thing was to play in record track mode and get a cool odd interplay with notes that was an odd sort of relative of arpeggio. I have work coming up soon in a festival of sound art that is based on what I learned with my sk1.

Ok, does anyone know about any sk-1 easter eggs? A few times in my sk-1's life, I have turned it on haphazardly only to discover the sound coming out of it was a neat synth bass sound...octaves below what I was used to hearing. I may have been leaning on a key when turning it on...I've tried more things like that; turning it on while holding keys down. Can't seem to get the bass sound again...the only thing I keep getting is an odd, almost distorted sine wave sound with a noisy motor sound in the background reminiscent of an NES game. Could it be my sk-1 is just messed up a little and these flukes can only be obtained by physical bending? I'd LOVE to know! p.s. I was at the studio of a very famous grammy-award winning producer/musician (I won't name-drop) a week or two ago and he had an sk-1. They're everywhere... :) Matt.

Any word on the availability of a real AD-1 AC adaptor (for the SK-1)? I purchased an AD-1UL type from amazon AND from the authorized CASIO parts distribitor "American Perfit". I had an SK1 and SK60. The SK1 was the best thing ever - I 'bent' mine to sync with a Boss DR Rhythm (DR550) drum machine. It was great! I could record a sequence in the SK1 and then use the DR550 to trigger it! Something weird used to happen very occasionally. It would suddenly start cycling through a couple of the preset tones in sequence (on the 'A' note that the samples centre on) and just stick there. Naturally this got incorporated into a song that I recorded. I suspect this was a hidden test mode?

I've got both the Casio SK-1 and the Realistic ConcertMate-500. Both appear to have the same internal circuitry, funtions, and casing. I'm curious what the difference in brand means, as there is nothing else different between the two as far as I can tell. I imagine Realist may be an off-shoot of Casio? Perhaps like Fender is to Squier, or Gibson is to Epiphone? I've started to work them into some of my tunes and have been pretty pleased with the results. I'm thinking about trying to mod mine so that the sampling trigger can be started with a footswitch, allowing me to tap the switch and capture the next lines I'm singing If I route it thru. Any ideas, anyone done something like this already? I have the box and manual if anyone has any questions about either email me. Check out the tunes if you care to listen, www.myspace.com/michaeldufault -Michael

Hi guys/girls, I recently received a Casio SK-1 as a gift from a friend. The problem is that it came to me 'dead'. From what I can tell all of the componentry is fine but the wee thing just won't power up ie. the red LED doesn't light and no sound comes out. I have checked the power switch - this is fine. I have checked that the main CPU is receiving power - it is. All in all I cant find any problems, except it won't go. Do you know any common faults or know anyone that may be able to help out?

Make sure the voltage is correct on the line in. The standards were different for analog when the keyboard was made. Its printed by the plug or check the manual. You've probably already shorted out the line in but its designed to melt and be easily resoldered. The NEXT time you short it out it shorts out the keyboard.

I don't get it. Casio made MUCH BETTER samplers than the SK range! How about the professional 16-bit, 8-channel polyphonic FZ range made around the same time? Those larger, full-sized keyboards were the REAL deal. None of this toy crap! The FZ-1, FZ-10m and FZ-20m keyboards are just as easy to use as an SK-5 and probably the best entry-level professional samplers Casio ever made (well, they are pretty much the ONLY real samplers they made!). To be able to put 64 different samples in memory and on the keyboard with an FZ-1, the possibilities are almost limitless! Replace the floppy drive with a USB slot interface and you have one HELL of a kick-ass sampler! And they look cool too! :D

@Amp_drool ... you're right, I was missing the point. The funny thing is, my entire attitude used to be completely opposite to what I wrote there, long before I found this site. It seems I've changed my mind considerably since I posted that rant and I'm glad to report that I now consider myself a qualified 8-bit sampling nut with an ever growing, ever expanding pile of Casio sampling keyboards (I own every model, including TWO DM-100s!). You see, I used to own an SK-1 way back when they were brand new, but over time I discovered virtual instruments and MIDI controllers, etc, and lost the sense of experimentation, wonder and discovery that one gets with limited technologies. Also, the problem with collecting retro keyboards is that once you start, it is incredibly difficult to stop! :)

Hi, I'm Maurizio Terzo from Italy. I've just launched a new forum about Casio Products. I'm a casio lover, so for me this is all about fun. It is not a commercial project, I don't expect to make money from it, I'd just like to see the community grow, and in the future, maybe, cover bandwidth costs; this would be more than enough for me. The forum covers different areas, from Casio watches to pocket computers and even circuit bending for all those old casio keyboards ;) There is not a site like this (as far as I know) on the net and I think this could be a great reference point for all Casio enthusiasts like me. The address of the site is: www.casiocollectors.com Please don't consider this message as spam and, if you like the whole thing, feel free to sign up and drop a line... :) Maurizio

If you have one of these sk-1's just stored up in your basement or attic and you don't have use for it can you please message me? I would really really really appreciate it .

Hey all! I have a lot of Casio/Yamaha keyboards of all sizes and years...some complete and working some not. Sk-1, SK 60, Pss 22, 11, 170, casio MT (about ten models)... Any circuit benders out there interested? Just want them to end up well used and not throw them away!

I just converted my Sk-1 into a Keytar using the neck from a Guitar hero II Les Paul Wii controller, it has the first two buttons as One Key Play, the third as Autoplay, the fourth as Delete, and the fifth as Reset. I added four additional buttons, they are Clear, Fill-In, and the two Tempo buttons. For a very worrisome few minutes I thought I'd killed my precious SK-1, but I just needed to add additional electrical insulation over the switch board's foil-on-paper RF shield. it looks very nice and plays like a dream, I of course installed strap attachments at the top front edges of the SK-1's sides so I can wear it like a guitar. My next project is to create a foot switch setup to select between a headset microphone or a computer line out with one foot pedal and to direct the line output either to an earphone or an amplifier with a second foot pedal. That way I can set up a laptop to deliver samples to the SK-1 or use my voice, and I can take the keytar offline from the amplifier and set up samples to play when I put the amp back online. I'm essentially making a performance package to go with the keytar so I can jam with it. :)

I have a Casio Sk-1 to sell. I ust purchased it cause I thought it was pretty neat-looking in the store. Put some batteries in it and it works! But since I haven't mastered the keyboard--it's for sale!

Heads up! I'm about to list my Casio Rap-2 "Rap Studio" on Ebay. Also known as the DJ-1 in Japan. It's in perfect working condition.

Just bought a SK-1 on a Queensday Fleamarket for only 1 euro ! Perfect sounding, only one key is broken(F#) and of course the missing battery cover ... I'm ready to go sample and mangle my sound ... Tip: Sample any sound you like ... Feed tyhe output through some '80 Roland 1/2 19" FX (e.g. ROD-10, RDD-20, RPS-10,...) and the sound grows like Godzilla !!!

Just bought one today for 3 bucks. I really like it, and didn't know it existed till I bought it. Some of it's features aren't as cool, but it's not going to stop me from being productive with it!
LyleGood  [kgood010208-AT-gmail.com]  07/31/2013 06:17
